I was recently invited to do a talk via Zoom by the Thompson Nicola Regional Library and the Kamloops Society of the Written Arts. It was a real honour to be asked to do the talk and I chose to focus on how science fiction and society share a connection – how one influences the other and vice versa.
In the course of preparing my presentation, I realised there was an enormous amount that could be said on the topic. Science fiction as a storytelling genre is vast and it’s indelible mark on culture and people through the years can be discussed without exhausting the topic. I chose to give a broad-strokes overview of three major elements of science fiction in society.
- Science fiction’s influence on technological progress/development.
- Science and space discoveries and exploration, and their relationship to science fiction.
- Cultural/societal commentary as seen in science fiction.
